EEE detected in Richmond mosquito sample; frost could impact mosquito population

THIS IS FOR THE INDUSTRY. (MM) WE BEGIN TONIGHT WITH ANOTHER CONFIRMATION OF TRIPLE- IN SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND. GOOD EVENING — I’M MIKE MONTECALVO. THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT RECENTLY SPRAYED PARTS OF RHODE ISLAND — BUT IT WASN’T ENOUGH TO KILL —–ALL THE MOSQUITOES INFECTED WITH THE VIRUS. OFFICIALS CONFIRM TODAY A MOSQUITO COLLECTED IN RICHMOND HAS TRIPLE-E. TONIGHT’S HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME WAS BUMPED UP TO AVOID —-PEAK MOSQUITO HOURS IN AN EFFORT TO PROTECT PLAYERS AND FANS. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER BRITTANY SCHAFER WAS AT THE GAME IS NOW HERE IN STUDIO … WITH THE NEW DETAILS. (BS) MIKE – TONIGHT THE CHARIHO HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME WAS SCHEDULED ALMOST THREE HOURS EARLY TO AVOID PEAK MOSQUITO HOURS BUT SOME FAMILIES SAY THEY ARE STILL WORRIED. RHODE ISLAND OFFICIALS ANNOUNCING FRIDAY EEE HAS BEEN FOUND IN MOSQUITOES IN RICHMOND. CHARIHO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MIKE SHIELS SAYS TONIGHT’S FOOTBALL GAME WAS MOVED EARLIER TO AVOID MOSQUITOES. “All of our football games are scheduled for Friday at 7:00 but unfortunately due to smart scheduling we moved it to 4:15.” SHIELS SAYS IT’S IMPORTANT TO PROTECT STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES BUT THE SCHEDULING HASN’T BEEN EASY. “There are no advantages. Smaller crowds, players don’t have a lot of time to get ready, it puts a lot of stress of myself and staff to get the fields ready. Officials have to get here and some of them work, it’s just not an easy thing and I think a lot of schools are struggling.” FAMILIES WATCHING THE GAME LIKE THE BURGESS FAMILY SAY THEY ARE GLAD THE GAME WAS EARLIER AND DON’T WANT THEY’RE SON PLAYING DURING PEAK MOSQUITO HOURS. “I think it’s scary knowing a mosquito bite can cause so much harm. It’s great the game the football game is moved up to an earlier time.” “Long sleeves, shirts bug spray making sure the kids and adults have whatever they need to wear.” “The safety of our kids and families is basically everything.” (BS) AND BOTH MASSACHUSETTS AND RHODE ISLAND HAVE STOPPED WIDESPREAD AERIAL SPRAYING FOR THE SEASON. THE RISK OF EEE TYPICALLY LASTS UNTIL THE FIRST HARD FROST. LIVE IN THE STUDIO BRITTANY
