Exercises for Tennis Players : Training for Tennis in Sand

Okay if you’re lucky enough to be near a beach
or have access to a sand volley ball court like we do here at this fine park; but, a
lot of places, you do have some sandy areas. So, if you can train in sand, it makes your
workout that much more effective and it will make you quicker on a hard court. A sand area
is almost like a clay court. It’s going to be a little slower because you can see how
much give the sand has, but it makes you quicker on a hard court. So you just do all your exercises
like you were on a court by using the sand. So, I’m going to pretend like I’m going to
hit forehands and backhands. So side to side, forehand; side to side, backhand; side to
side, forehand and side to side, backhand. So you can see that this is real soft. It’s
easy on the body, but it really teaches; it gives you a great workout. Now the next thing
we’re going to add is, I’m going to sprint to the net and then I’m going to back pedal
and side step back. So, sprint and then side step and back pedal. So when you do exercises
like this in the sand, then you can really in your mind just play a whole game out here.
You’ll be amazed at how much quicker and stronger you get with little or no shock on your body.
So you can also just do a lot of shuttle drills and sprints out here. But the sand is a great
resource and if you can find a hill to run up in addition, that will really make your
fitness training go that much faster.
