From New Year’s Eve to Allstate Sugar Bowl: Tourism officials excited for busy week

DURING THEIR CELEBRATIONS. MARK ROMIG: IT’S GOING TO BE A LOT OF FUN AROUND THE MERCEDES-BENZ SUPERDOME, AND REALLY ALL AROUND DOWNTOWN AND THE FRENCH QUARTER — AND REALLY UP ON MAGAZINE STREET, AND DOWN IN THE BYWATER AND MID CITY. IT’S GOING TO BE FUN ALL THROUGHOUT NEW ORLEANS. KELSEY: DOZENS OF EVENTS ARE SCHEDULED ACROSS THE CITY FOR NEW YEARS EVE AND NEW YEARS DAY, INCLUDING THE SOLD-OUT ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL. MARK ROMIG: YOU’LL SEE OLE MISS. YOU’LL SEE OKLAHOMA STATE. AND YOU’LL HAVE PEOPLE WHO JUST COME TO THE SUGAR BOWL, BECAUSE IT’S A TRADITION JUST TO ENJOY THE GAME. THE LAST TIME THE ALLSTATE SUGAR BOWL HAD A PARADE IT WAS IN ATLANTA, THE YEAR THAT WE HAD TO MOVE THE GAME BECAUSE HURRICANE KATRINA AND THE MERCEDES-BENZ SUPERDOME NOT BEING READY. SO WE HAVEN’T HAD A SUGAR BOWL PARADE IN 10 YEARS, BUT WE HAVEN’T HAD ONE IN NEW ORLEANS IN MANY, MANY YEARS. SO IT’S GOING TO BE EXCITING. KELSEY: OF COURSE, WITH SO MANY PEOPLE FLOCKING TO THE CITY TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR, SAFETY IS A CONCERN. THE NEW ORLEANS POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL BE AT 100% STAFFING, ALL HANDS ON DECK, FROM THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY. AND THERE WILL ALSO BE ADDED STATE POLICE PRESENCE AROUND THE CITY — ESPECIALLY ALONG ROADWAYS TO ENFORCE THE “DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER” CAMPAIGN THAT IS UNDERWAY. STATE POLICE SAY 21 PEOPLE WERE KILLED ON LOUISIANA’S HIGHWAYS, AND MORE THAN 1,000 INJURED DURING THE CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS HOLIDAY LAST YEAR. MELISSA MATEY: DECISIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES. WE DON’T WANT PEOPLE TO END UP HAVING A TRAGEDY DURING THE HOLIDAYS. SO, WE ASK AND WE STRESS TO PEOPLE THAT THEY MAKE GOOD DECISIONS BEHIND THE WHEEL. THAT INCLUDES GETTING A SOBER DRIVER. KELSEY: TROOPER MELISSA MATEY SAYS WHILE YOU’RE OUT ENJOYING HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES, BE SMART. TRAVEL IN GROUPS, AVOID DRINKING TOO MUCH SO YOU CAN MAKE GOOD, SOUND DECISIONS, AND IF YOU SEE SOMETHING THAT SEEMS SUSPICIOUS — REPORT IT. LOUISIANA IS ONE OF SEVERAL STATES THAT USES THE “SEE SOMETHING SEND SOMETHING APP” — WHERE PEOPLE CAN SEND TIPS THAT ARE SHARED AMONG LOCAL, STATE, FEDERAL AND INTERNATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. MELISSA MATEY: IF YOU SEE SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T LOOK RIGHT, IF IT THE HAIR STANDS UP ON THE BACK OF YOUR NECK PLEASE LET US KNOW. THAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT. EVEN IF YOU THINK IT MIGHT NOT BE SOMETHING, LET US KNOW. LET US DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT THE THREAT MAY BE CREDIBLE. MARK ROMIG: IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE HERE, SO EVERYONE COME OUT AND HAVE A SAFE TIME. KELSEY: FOR WDSU NEWS, I’M
