NEWS 13’S AARON DRAWHORN IS IN THE NEWSPLEX WITH A LOOK AT THE SEVERE SHORTAGE — AARON: THE PAY IS NOT HIGH… NOT EVERYONE WILL AGREE WITH YOUR CALLS … AND SOME NASTY WORDS COULD FLY YOUR WAY TOO. HELP ISN’T JUST WANTED, IT’S NEEDED. UNDER THE FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS…. DONNING THE FAMILIAR BLACK AND WHITE STRIPES… AND GETTING CLOSE TO THE GRIDIRON ACTION …. Whiste blowing ARE THE OFFICIALS WHO WATCH EVERY PLAY. Crowd cheering THEIR CALLS ARE KEY. BUT NEW MEXICO DOESN’T HAVE ENOUGH OF THEM. Ken Murphy: “It’s really bad. KEN MURPHY STARTED AS A REF IN 1971. “The idea of officials being assaulted, being screamed at all the time gets a little annoying.” JUST ONE REASON FOR THE REF SHORTAGE…BUT THERE ARE PLENTY MORE. Ken: “People want things right away, and no, you’re not going to work your first year here at Wilson Stadium on a Friday night.” Dusty Young: “Without officials, we can’t play the game.” DUSTY YOUNG… WITH THE NEW MEXICO ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION SAYS… SPORTS OFFICIALS FROM ALBUQUERQUE ARE HAVING TO TRAVEL ALL ACROSS THE STATE TO FILL A VOID. “There are more games. there are more programs across the state.”.” THE SHORTAGE ISN’T JUST IN ONE SPORT.. FOOTBALL Soccer NATS SOCCER…. Basketball NATS BASKETBALL… Volleyball NATS AND VOLLEYBALL… ALL NEED MORE OFFICIALS… PLUS… Baseball NATS YOU CAN’T “PLAY BALL” WITHOUT UMPIRES. “it really is an epidemic right now. we have an extreme shortage.” NO MATTER THE SPORT, OR HOW THEIR UNIFORM LOOKS, NO MATTER IF THEIR DECISIONS ARE CALLED INTO QUESTION… AND AT THE END OF THE GAME…. Ken: “We try to tell people it’s fun. It’s kinda like our own little cult.” …IT’S A WIN-WIN EXPERIENCE. THE N-M-A-A SAYS…. THEY ALSO WANT TO RECRUIT OFFICIALS WHO CAN COMMIT FOR THE LONG HAUL… NOT JUST A SEASON OR TWO. THEY COULD NOT GIVE AN ESTIMATE ON MANY POSITIONS ARE NEEDED … BUT IT’S STATEWIDE AND ALL SPORTS. DEAN.
