PawSox brass meet with Worcester city officialsDavid Frank October 13, 2019 0 COMMENTS
(MM) WE’RE HEARING FROM THE PAWSOX, THE GOVERNOR, AND PAWTUCKET’S MAYOR TONIGHT — ABOUT THE TEAM’S VISIT LAST WEEK TO ANOTHER POTENTIAL HOST CITY! WE’VE REPORTED THAT—- THE PAWSOX HAVE BEEN CONSIDERING PITCHES OUTSIDE PAWTUCKET, AND EVEN OUT OF STATE — SINCE THEIR PROPOSAL FOR A NEW BALLPARK AT THE OLD APEX SITE, REMAINS HELD UP AT THE STATE HOUSE. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER JULIANNE PEIXOTO JOINS US LIVE TONIGHT WITH THE FOLLOW-UP. THAT’S RIGHT MIKE — WE CONFIRMED — A GROUP OF PAWSOX OFFICIALS VISITED WORCESTER MASSACHUSETTS ON FRIDAY. THOSE IN ATTENDANCE INCLUDED THE TEAM’S GENERAL MANAGER — CHAIRMAN — AND VICE CHAIRMAN — WHO HAPPENS TO BE A WORCESTER NATIVE. IT’S BEEN WEEKS SINCE THE PAWTUCKET RED SOX STOPPED EXCLUSIVE TALKS WITH PAWTUCKET — AND BEGAN WELCOMING OTHER PROSPECTIVE CITIES TO THE NEGOTIATION TABLE — INCLUDING WORCESTER. THE TEAM TELLS US — “The club toured the city’s bustling Canal District and learned of Worcester’s interest in the PawSox.” THE TEAM STRUCK A DEAL WITH PAWTUCKET EARLIER THIS YEAR — BUT AS THE BUDGET STANDOFF CONTINUES IN RHODE ISLAND — THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY STILL HAS NOT APPROVED THE PROPOSED 23 MILLION DOLLARS IN FUNDING FOR THE NEW BALLPARK. “I think the PawSox belong in Pawtucket, and there’s a good deal on the table right now that I hope the legislature will look at, take a hard look at and give it hearings, having said that, you know I think the owners as they say they’re free agents, and they have every right to look around.” PAWTUCKET MAYOR DON GREBIEN TOLD US IN A STATEMENT — “I have been concerned and been vocal that the longer we wait the more outreach the team will receive. We will lose the PawSox, the increased economic development and revenue without leadership and action- something we cannot allow to happen.” AS WE PREVIOUSLY REPORTED — ALONG WITH PAWTUCKET AND WORCESTER — SOME EAST PROVIDENCE OFFICIALS ARE ALSO HOPING TO LURE THE TEAM TO THEIR CITY. BUT THAT PROPOSAL IS STILL JUST AN IDEA. LIVE IN THE CONTROL ROOM JULIANNE PEIXOTO EYEWITNESS NEWS.
