Practice Table Tennis Drills Alone: Without the table


Welcome to the channel of coach EmRatThich. Today is the Ping Sunday. I will
show you the best way to practice alone without the table. You will
understand more about which muscle that the Chinese focus the most in
table tennis training. Life is Musicz asked “I don’t have a serious
table tennis partner. Can you
make a video on practising alone as per chinese philosphy”. Table tennis is the game of coordination. You need to move and to incorporate
the movement of your body to make a stroke. That’s why you should train with
the table and with a partner. For some reasons, that you want to practice
alone. Practicing alone without the table will not
improve your coordination. However, by
practicing alone, you can develop the 2 important aspects of table tennis. Chinese philosophy about the physical training
in table tennis focuses on the lower part of the body. The most important muscle groups are the back,
the hip (waist) and the leg. Xu Xin has answered in the interview that,
for him, the back muscle is the most important in table tennis. You can see that this Chinese player is training
the back and the hip muscle. His
legs are kept fix. He uses mainly the hip to generate the power. Chinese
philosophy considers the hip as the connection of the 2 body parts: lower part to
generate power, and upper part to transfer the power. If you have to practice alone, you should
focus on these muscles. The stronger
these muscles are, the quicker you get into the position, and your strokes will be
more powerful. Again, you can see that this player focus
on the muscle of the leg and the back. He holds the tool with his forearm, and then
use the body to generate the power. His elbow is very close to the body. This training will increase
the power of his forehand topspin attack because it shares the same stroke
mechanism. And this training will improve the power of
his backhand topspin far from the table. He focuses mainly on the rotation of the body. This is the way, the Chinese
players add the power to all of the strokes. They focus on several muscle groups,
the back, the hip, the abdomen. The forearm is the part of the upper limb
between the elbow and the wrist. Because
the backhand stroke is the quick stroke, so you should train also the forearm muscle. It’s like you take out the sword. This action will increase the explosiveness
of your backhand close to the table. So the first aspect you can practice alone
without the table is the physical strength of the lower part of your body. The second aspect is the “explosiveness” and
the “precision”. This is the best example of “explosiveness”. Many players focus only on pulling back
the racket before hitting the ball but don’t know how to “accelerate” correctly. Look at
this Chinese player. He puts his racket on the ball, no need to
pull the racket back, and suddenly generate a lot of power to the
ball. Where does this power come from? It doesn’t come from his forearm, but it comes
from the rotation of his body. Now you understand more what I’ve said in
my previous videos: “Power from the ground. That’s your body (waist) will generate most
of the power, the forearm is only a tool to transfer this power”. This is the secret of Chinese table tennis
techniques, they found the way to increase the stroke power
in the shorter amount of time. Because
the waist muscle is much stronger and quicker than the forearm muscle. This Chinese player is indeed a very good
player. His stroke is powerful and of course,
his ball is very spinny and fast. Because “explosiveness” and “acceleration”
is the main reason that makes the ball spin. Not many players know that a table tennis
stroke has 3 phases: slow (relax), acceleration (explode), and slow (recovery). This is the best way that our muscle
compacts it’s energy and then release it suddenly. Look at this player, the
explosiveness of his stroke is very good. It happens in a fraction of a second. So if you do your stroke in a linear way,
without “acceleration”, it’s not good. You should change it, do your stroke in 3
phases. You can also clearly see
the technique of this player: his elbow is very close to the body. He lowers his
center of the gravity, and use the waist to generate the power. You can also practice the “precision” by focusing
the moment you hit the ball. Prepare well before hitting is the key to
avoid missing the ball. The weight
transfer between the left and right foot is also very important. You should
memorize this mechanism because it’s fundamental in table tennis. To improve your table tennis techniques, you
should repeat the training every day. Repetition is the only way to change your
bad habit, to correct your stroke. I recommend you compare this technique with
your videos, you will clearly see the huge different. You hit with only one phase without
“acceleration”, and this Chinese guy hit with 3 phases. That’s it for today. Hope you enjoy the video. See you next weekend.

    the first exercises (min. 1.11 ) is very bad for the lower part of the back, the position is wrong, the eyes are to watch up, not the floor, when you do phisical exsercises that involved the back is very very important to know well how do it  or you will cause injury

    bro how can I fucking fix my timing problem on serves?man i can create alot of spin and even get the ball to get back towards me as i developed the heavy feeling for spinning the ball but lmao im always a fraction of second late in my serves and like 70% of time i hit the air lol i fucking hate god when i can create good spins now he doesnt want me to time my serves will it come with more experience?because i have anxiety and its frustrating please tell me and thanks.

    I must fundamentally disagree with tension-exercises for racquet sports. They produce the maximum resistance at full extension, and least at lowest extension.
    There is no question they are strength-builders. But the body adapts strength-extension-resistance profiles under the constraints it is accustomed to. In explosive racquet acceleration, you want the maximum resistance at the start of the stroke, where the biomechanics are facing inertia.

    Physics dictates, by the conservation of momentum, that yes, power starts at the legs thence through the waist. High-mass/low-velocity momentum is converted through the shoulders, arms, and wrist to low-mass/high velocity momentum at the blade.

    The closest strength-training match to best model this conversion is the use of a lightly-weighted blade for stroke-reps, and an unbalanced barbell (light plate at one end, heavy at the other) for power and maximum 'snap'. The weighted blade (~0.5 to 1.0 kg) is shadow-stroked for all attacking strokes 10 sets of 100 reps a day. The heavy weight, 3 sets for 10 reps, esp. for backhand and forehand loops. You don't need more than that; muscles can only strengthen at a given rate. You can keep upping the weight a bit, though.

    I can tell you that after a year of this I had some of the wickedest attacking shots in terms of sheer power off both wings, comparable to national players (Canada). That's not personal opinion. Art Barran, who was ITTF president at the time, 70's, was amazed when I played a forehand side-spin loop: "That's a nice hook-shot!" What I didn't have was a good style philosophy. So I was always a poor player. But it had nothing to do with power, quality or consistency (my practice partner Greg compared me to a robot) of shots.

    Very informative video. But one thing that makes me confuse is. On 5:45 you said "the technique of this player: his elbow very close to the body" and when I watched Xu Xin in slow motion. I found that He strech his hand while doing forehand attack. Which one is correct? Or, it's just how He (man in the video) position the ball!? Thank you.

    I think when you practice alone, you should have a coach nearby (or send your movies to EmRatThich for correction).
    It is also a very easy way to develop wrong techniques, as I have seen many ppl do it in my club.

We all already know that. As for this video, when i clicked on it, i was actually quite excited but later i found out that u needed machines which is something i will never get. i miss your old videos. they are way better than your recent ones

    im a forward spinner player

    When I play my forehand stroke it makes a sidespin instead of topspin thats why it confuse my opponent because it looks like a topsin ball but I want to know how to topspin the ball instead of sidespin .

    what should I do?should I do a shadow stroke in practice?
    but I want to maintain my forehand stroke with sidespin to confuse my opponent

    Interesting training methods. It seems to me the equipment used by the player in the video (the "explosiveness" training device in particular) is not readily, or easily available for purchase. How would you suggest players to train for "explosiveness" if without those devices? Would a ball feeding robot be a good substitute/alternative?

    Hello , teacher . You always talk about explosiveness… but in the middle of the game you have to do some variation , to prevent the other player to attack or difficulte the game for you… Sometimes the lack of explosiveness could be a suprise factor ? … . Because if you add lot of power it could be good to the other player… maybe he can use your power against you… and maybe your footwork maybe do not respond well (but I´m talking for me… an amateur player )… . And of course … train the explosiveness is somenthing really good… you can finish the point quickly , without waisting lots of energy on a rally .
