Rivers running high, fast

REPORTER: YOU CAN GET AN IDEA OF HOW STRONG THESE CURRENTS ARE JUST I LOOKING AT THOSE BUOYS, AND YOU CAN HEAR THE THUNDER FROM THE WATER RUSHING OVER THE DAM. A LOAN GREEN — LONE GREEN KAYAK, WEDGED AGAINST THE BUOYS IS THE ONLY REMAINING SIGN OF THE POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING SITUATION THAT UNFOLDED WEDNESDAY EVENING ON THE MERRIMACK RIVER IN HOOKESTT. FIVE TEENS DESCRIBED AS INEXPERIENCED KAYAKERS, FOUND THEMSELVES IN THE SAME SITUATION AS THAT KAYAK — KAYAK.>>THE CURRENT HERE GOES BELOW THOSE BUOY LINES, GOES OVER A SMALL LOWERHEAD DAM AND THEY CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE DROWNED. REPORTER: THE KAYAKS WERE RENTED FROM EDGEWATER CANOE AND KAYAK JUST UP THE RIVER. THE OWNER DECLINING TO COMMENT ON WHETHER OR NOT THE TEENS WERE GIVEN ANY SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.>>WITH HIGH RIVERS, WE DON’T RENT. REPORTER: AT CONTOOCOOK RIVER CANOE COMPANY IN CONCORD THEY SAY THEY’VE GOTTEN CALLS FROM PEOPLE LOOKING TO BEAT THE HEAT BUT IT’S SIMPLY TOO DANGEROUS TO LET PEOPLE OUT ON THE RIVER.>>WITH THE SNOW MELT AND THE RAIN WE’VE JUST HAD, THE RIVERS ARE HIGH RIGHT NOW AND THEY’RE MOVING QUICK. REPORTER: MALFAIT SAYS WITH THE RIVERS THIS HIGH, IF SOMEBODY FELL IN, IT WOULD BE TOUGH TO GET THEM OUT, AS THE EMBANKMENTS ARE VERY STEEP, AND WHILE IT MAY BE HOT OUTSIDE, AND THE WATER LOOKS VERY INVITING — THOSE APPEARANCES CAN BE DECEIVING.
