The Rules of Olympic Weightlifting – EXPLAINED!

Ninh explains, the Rules of Olympic Weightlifting
The object of the game is to lift more combined weight than your opponents.
Weightlifting, sometimes referred to as Olympic Weightlifting is a true test of strength and
power. Weightlifters are separated into weight class and must successfully lift a barbell
with weights over their heads with complete control.
To compete in weightlifting, you must perform two different kinds of lifts.
The Snatch. The first lift is the Snatch. This is where
you must lift the weight over your head in one single motion and holding the weight under
control. In the snatch, it is advantageous to adopt a wide grip, and once you perform
the lift, squat down to make it easier to lift over your head.
The Clean & Jerk The second lift is the clean and jerk. This
is where you must lift the weight in two stages, the clean – to get the weight at shoulder
level, and then the jerk, to lift the weight over your head and under control. It is advantageous
to adopt a narrow grip to get the weight up, and lunge forward to hoist it over your head
more easily. When you successfully lift the weight over
your head and have it under control, a buzzer will sound and you may put the weight down.
Three judges will indicate either a good lift (which is denoted by a white light), or a
failed lift (which is denoted by a red light). For a result to stand, at least two white
lights must show. The weightlifter who lifts the heaviest weight
combined from both events, wins. You have to be careful though, as you only
have three attempts at both the snatch and the clean and jerk.
Therefore weightlifters have to be tactical about what they attempt to lift and when,
not just to out lift your opponent, but failing to lift three times in one event effectively
rules you out of the contest. Do you attempt more weight than anyone else
on your first attempt? Or lift lightly in one event and go heavier
in the next? That is up to you. Weightlifting is very simple to understand,
but there’s a few other things you’ll need to know before contesting in or watching
Olympic weightlifting. For example:
Lifting Order All weightlifters must nominate the weight
that they intend to lift. The person who wants to lift the lightest
weight goes first, followed by the next lightest etc. This carries on until each weightlifter
has had their three attempts. Tiebreaker.
Should two weightlifters lift the exact same combined weight, the weightlifter with the
lighter bodyweight is declared the winner. In the rare case that the lifts and bodyweight
are both exactly the same, the person who lifted the combined weight first, or in fewer
attempts is declared the winner. Chalk
Weightlifters douse their hands and sometimes their chest in chalk.
This is to eliminate moisture and provide a little bit more grip on the barbell.

    Great video. You should do a video on Kabaddi. It is one of the most ancient sports in the world, the 2nd most popular sport in India, and the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) is fast catching up to cricket in popularity. It is also popular across South Asia. Given the size of South Asian population, Kabaddi is among the most popular sports in the world, even if it doesn't have much popularity elsewhere. I would also say that in rural India, Kabaddi is more popular than cricket (which is more elitist). There are videos on YouTube of PKL matches and international matches.

    Just fyi the guy at very start of the video representing the USA was accused of rape fairly recently. Probably not the best person to have in a video about weightlifting. His is name is Colin Burns.

    Also the bodyweight tiebreaker rule isnt used anymore. Now its just who ever lifts more in the snatch.

    Actually with the tiebreaker rule it changed last year, in that the body weight no longer plays a part and it’s whoever hit the total first wins.

    There's also another important rule. When the bar is lifted over your head, your arm must be completely straight at the top of the lift. If your elbows are bent, it's a bad lift.

    At the tiebreak it's not the lightest bodyweight that wins anymore (Sinclair system) but it's the person to have lifted the heaviest first.
