The Rules of Softball – EXPLAINED!

Ninh Explains the Rules of Softball
The object of the game is for your team to score more runs than the opposing team. Softball is a variation of the game of Baseball,
and the rules are very similar with some significant differences. Firstly, the field is generally a lot smaller. And the equipment used is also different. To score a run, a player must hit the ball
between the foul lines and run across the three bases and back to home. A hit outside these lines is classed as a
‘foul ball’ and the batter is not allowed to run. The essence of the game is between the pitcher
of one team against the batter of the other team. As mentioned before, the batter’s job is
to hit the ball between the foul lines but the pitchers job is to get the batter
out by throwing into the strikezone. This is an imaginary box that’s the width
of home plate and roughly between the batters armpits and knees. In Baseball, the pitcher stands on a mound
and throws the ball overarm. In Softball, the pitcher stands on a flat
surface, and must throw a bigger softer ball, underarm. If the pitcher throws the ball through this
area – it’s a strike. If the batter swings and misses any ball,
it’s also a strike. If the batter hits the ball outside the foul
lines, it can be a 1st or 2nd Strike. And obviously, three strikes means – you’re
out! A pitch outside this area is called a ‘ball’. Four balls against a batter and they get to
walk to first base. That sounds simple enough, but there are 3
other ways for a team to get you out. Firstly, if the batter hits the ball along
the ground, the opposing team can throw the ball, to the base they’re running to. If the ball beats the batter to the base – they’re
out. A batter can be tagged out whilst running
between the bases. If they hit the ball and the ball is caught
in the air by the opposing team – they’re also out. Once three outs have been made, their half
of the inning is over and the other team gets to bat. Once both teams have batted, this is known
as an inning. The game is played over 7 innings. There are no ties in softball, so if the score
is tied after 7 innings, extra innings will be played to determine the winner. That’s basically it – but there’s a few
other rules you’ll need to know before playing or watching Softball. For example:
Home Run: If a batter hits the ball out of the park between the foul lines, the batter
(and anyone standing on the bases) get to walk freely around the bases and back to home. All runs score. Stealing bases: To help move the batters along
the bases, some players will try and make a run for the next base. This is a risky gamble, as the opposing team
will be prepared for this, and will try and get you out. If the batter is caught out, they are ‘caught
stealing’. Tagging up: If the ball is caught in the air:
any players standing on the bases must start from that base before running for the next
one. Double play: This is where the ball is hit
in play and the defending team gets two outs, usually by way of throwing to one base, and
then another. There are many other rules not discussed here,
but as you watch or play Softball, the rules will become clear. If you have found this at all video helpful,
please like, share and subscribe. It takes me ages to make one of these things
and good karma is very much appreciated. Be sure to follow me on Twitter also, but
in the meantime, Enjoy Softball. Ninh Ly – www.ninh.co.uk – @NinhLyUK

Ninh explains the Rules of Softball. I'm not sure why so many people requested this one given that it's about 90% similar to Baseball, but oh well. Hopefully some of you find this useful.

Pitchers in Baseball can and are allowed to throw the ball underarm sideways ect..I was an underarm pitcher my self (submarine style of pitch) when i played Baseball in Australia.. And a softball ball is not exactly soft. Its hard tight ball too.
Also theres two main types of softball games.Slow pitch and Fast pitch,,the rules are a little different even in the number of players on the field.Slow pitch softball pitchers wear a mask to protect there face during pitching. they get alot of hard ball softball aim at them! during a slow pitch game.
In fast pitch softball you cannot steal a base until the ball leaves the pitchers hand. foot must be tag on base,no lead off like in baseball, big differents!

To elaborate on the field size, compared to a baseball field, a softball field is 2/3 scale. Home to first is 90 feet in baseball and 60 feet in softball.

Hey Ninh, I didn't see it mentioned anywhere in the comments section, so I wanted to raise an issue about base-stealing in softball. From my understanding it's quite a bit different than from baseball in that the baserunner MUST remain touching the base until the ball has left the pitcher's hand in softball, while in baseball, the baserunner is not obligated to remain touching the base (known as leading off when they leave the base) and may break for the next base whenever they so choose.

Oddly softball is closer to earlier (vintage) versions of US Baseball and to Irish Rounders and Welsh Baseball, than modern baseball. Like the underarm pitch, and the relaxed "lets have fun" atmosphere of the game.

Should of explain stealing a bit more in the video. Stealing from usually 12u and up is when the pitcher relases the ball however if runner leaves early the runner is out and the pitch is dead. youth ball can put rule in place for 9-12 that they can leave the base till it crosses home this is usually just in rec ball just matters on town.

So this is how I’m understanding
So if your batter and you hit the ball you run as fast as you can till you get to a base and if you have enough time run to the next and if you don’t hit the ball the catcher chatches it from behind and you have to go again and if you miss 3 times your out and of you the thrower you have to throw the balk and if the girl hits it you have to wait till another person throws it back to you

I think I’m stupid this is all probably wrong

So I have some questions. Can you simplify tagging up? I thought if the ball is caught then the batter is automatically out? Also you say base runners must run from the base they are at but is that not always the case?

Also hitting the ball between the foul lines means you want to hit the ball between the baselines connecting 2nd and 3rd base right?
