UGA officials investigating alleged racist comment made by baseball player

COVERAGE YOU CAN COUNT ON BEGINS WITH AN INCIDENT UNFOLDING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA INVOLVING A FORMER LOCAL BASEBALL STAR. DEE: NEWSCHANNEL 6’S DEVIN JOHNSON IS IN THE STUDIO. HE HAS MORE WITH THE LATEST. DEVIN: A FORMER GREENBRIER HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PLAYER, IS BEING ACCUSED OF SHOUTING RACIAL SLURS AT A UGA FOOTBALL GAME. AFTER A STUDENT POSTED HER CONCERNS ABOUT THE INCIDENT ON FACEBOOK, THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA IS INVESTIGATING. DEVIN: A FACEBOOK POST THAT IS GAINING ATTENTION… A STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA WRITES, “TODAY AT THE GAME THERE WAS A GUY SITTING NEAR MY FRIENDS AND I, THAT DECIDED TO YELL OUT” PUT THE RACIAL SLUR IN THE GAME.” DEVIN: MULTIPLE REPORTS SAY THE PERSON TO WHOM THE STUDENT WAS REFERRING IS ADAM SASSER, A FIRST BASEMAN FOR THE GEORGIA BASEBALL TEAM AND GRADUATE OF GREENBRIER HIGH SCHOOL. HE IS BEING ACCUSED OF SHOUTING RACIAL SLURS TOWARD QUARTERBACK JUSTIN FIELDS. ALEXIS BIGDEN -HUNT /RESIDENT: “WE’VE BEEN RAISED BEING TOLD THAT IT’S OKAY TO CERTAIN PEOPLE TO SAY THIS WORD IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES AND IT SHOULDN’T BE USED AT ALL.” DEVIN: ALEXIS BIGDEN-HUNT BELIEVES SASSER’S ALLEGED COMMENTS DOES NOT REPRESENT THE RIVER REGION AS A WHOLE. ANOTHER PERSON I SPOKE WITH TOLD ME SHE BELIEVES THE UNIVERSITY SHOULD FIGURE WHY WHOEVER SAID IT DID WHAT THEY DID. TAKISHA CARRENARD / RESIDENT: “I THINK WE SHOULD EXPLORE WHY HE FELT LIKE IT WAS IMPORTANT TO SAY THOSE THINGS, ESPECIALLY IN THE ENVIRONMENT, THEY WERE IN. THAT NEEDS TO BE EXPLORED ON WHY HE FELT THAT WAY.” DEVIN: IN A STATEMENT FROM UGA’S HEAD BASEBALL COACH, SCOTT STRICKLIN SAYS “I EXPECT EVERY MEMBER OF OUR TEAM TO BEHAVE AT ALL TIMES IN A WAY THAT UPHOLDS THE HIGHEST STANDARDS AND VALUES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, AND IT’S DISAPPOINTING WHEN THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN.” DEVIN: THE UNIVERSITY’S EQUAL OPPORTUNITY OFFICE IS HEADING THE INVESTIGATION. GEORGIA’S FOOTBALL COACH KIRBY SMART ADDRESSED THE SITUATION WHEN ASKED ABOUT IT IN HIS WEEKLY PRESS CONFERENCE. KIRBY SMART: WE’RE TRYING TO BUILD A PROGRAM ON TOLERANCE AND MUTUAL RESPECT. YOU CAN’T CONTROL WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY, BUT THE EXPECTATION IS THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE PART OF OUR PROGRAM, AND ATTENDING OUR GAMES, SHARE THE SAME BELIEFS THAT WE DO. IT’S SAD THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS WOULD HAPPEN. DEVIN: BOTH CARRENARD AND BIGDEN-HUNT BELIEVE WHOEVER SAID THE COMMENT SHOULD GET A SECOND CHANCE. TAKISHA CARRENARD / RESIDENT: “I DON’T THINK YOU SHOULD RUIN THE KID’S LIFE OVER IT. HOWEVER, IF THIS IS AN ON-GOING THING; WHATEVER PUNISHMENT YOU GAVEOTHER PEOPLE, HE SHOULD HAVE THAT SAME PUNISHMENT.” ALEXIS BIGDEN -HUNT /RESIDENT: I DO THINK HE SHOULD GO THROUGH SOME SORT OF EDUCATIONAL PROCESSING TO LEARN WHAT HIS ACTIONS MEAN, AND HOW THEY ARE WRONG.” DEVIN: THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS, GREG MCGARITY RELEASED A STATEMENT READING QUOTE WE ARE AWARE OF A REPORTED INCIDENT THIS WEEKEND INVOLVING CONDUCT BY ONE OF OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES. WHILE WE ARE LIMITED IN WHAT WE CAN SAY ABOUT THE INCIDENT AT THIS TIME, I WANT TO REEMPHASIZE THAT WE DO NOT CONDONE DISCRIMINATORY BEHAVIOR. THE UNIVERSITY’S EQUAL OPPORTUNITY OFFICEREVIEWS ALL REPORTED VIOLATIONS OF OUR NON- DISCRIMINATION AND ANTI-HARASSMENT POLICY TO ENSURE AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE. END QUOTE DEE BACK TO YOU. DEE:

Georgia is almost half black now anyway, right?
Will such comments be considered "racist" when whites are the minority there? Can we play that card?

Now we have a Georgia professor talking about white people need to die and black people need to kill white people. Google it. The university is supporting him! If we are gonna ever live in peace together both black and white need to be held accountable for racist comments. Especially a professor indoctrinating kids to kill white people or the other way around.
