Volleyball Explained: High Ball in Transition

What are the options of a volleyball team in transition? What is the best way to organise our counterattack? Should we risk each time and try to put the ball as close as possible to the net or just leave it high in the middle of the court and play a high ball at the ends. Let’s hear the opinion of Massimo Barbolini – one of the worlds volleyball best coaches. In sum – as I told, it’s very difficult. Not only to set one quick ball, but also to attack quick ball in transition. It depends… It depends on the trajectory of the ball that arrives on the other side. If the ball is touched by the block, there is time for the setter, it is not so difficult to put the ball close to the net, it’s normal that we must attack as by a plus reception, double plus reception. We must. It’s not possible, absolutely. But if the ball is really quick, ok? Even if we put the defense high, high and you are perfectly close to the net, it is difficult – ok, to arrive for the middle blockers with the approach, to attack. Or for the setter to arrive. If the ball is in this side I prefer that the ball is higher and not quick. Because… Why? Because for the spiker it is more easy to play against two or three, but in women it’s difficult that they arrive three. But even if they are arriving three, for me it’s easier to arrive against three blockers with high ball that against one, one and a half with a ball that you cannot choose what you can do. I repeat, I don’t say that I’m right. I don’t tell why I’m right. I explain you why. Ok? Because the spiker can play with the middle as high, you have more choice. You can use the net, you can try to play short diagonal, you can play a tip over the block. Or as I told, as I said – use the block, play again, against the block. Then you can play a ball more easy, play again and after you can put an easy ball to the setter and you can play. You can see today this situation, you’ll see. Ok. There are many, many choices, when the ball is so quick, first of all must be perfect. Secondly, the spiker must arrive perfectly with the approach… to arrive. It’s very difficult. There is less attack… Maybe sometimes happens. Sometimes happens and everybody says “Bravo, great ball, great ball”, but if you check, if you watch – I have some numbers about for example when the libero sets this kind of ball or when the libero sets high. In my opinion it’s like this. In my opinion it’s like this. After I don’t want to convince nobody. But I think that it’s better. What I teach is this.
