Why are American officials worried about a port in Djibouti?

-There is widespread
understanding that the reason they seized
that terminal is because the Djiboutians are up
to their neck in debt to China and that they will in
the foreseeable future essentially yield that critically, strategic
container port to China. -American officials
are expressing concern over a strategic port in the small East
African country of Djibouti. The country hosts the only
permanent American base in Africa,
Camp Lemonnier. This base’s strategic location
has allowed the military to conduct counter-terrorism
operations in Somalia and Yemen. -The ability of
the United States to conduct military operations
from Djibouti is absolutely in the core national security interests
of the United States. -Djibouti recently seized
control of the Doraleh
container terminal, which had been operated
by a private company. The Djiboutian government claims
an official negotiating the agreement for the port
was influenced by bribery. -But we found out that there
were imbalances in the contract to the point
that we got convinced that the contract
was signed in bad faith. -In 2016,
an international arbitration court cleared that official. Members of Congress
and other American officials have expressed concern
that the Djiboutian government could hand over control
of the port to China. -I think it is entirely
plausible, indeed probable, that within the next six months, we will see the Doraleh port
container terminal at Djibouti transferred directly
into a Chinese company and that the Chinese
will eventually use that enormously important
strategic position to crowd out US military operations,
to constrain them. -If the Chinese did take over
that port, and again, we have assurances
from the Djiboutians they won’t, but if they did,
I mean, down the way, that restricts our access. That restricts the Navy’s
ability to get in there and just simply offload supplies
and the like, so there are challenges
with this. When we talk about influence
and access, this is a classic example with regards to China
of how we’ve got to proceed and how we’ve got to be careful
as we move forward. -And soon, Djibouti may hand over control of the Doraleh
container terminal, a strategically located
shipping port on the Red Sea, to Chinese
state-owned enterprises. Should this occur, the balance
of power in the horn of Africa, astride major arteries of
maritime trade between Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia,
would shift in favor of China. -Djiboutian officials have
assured the American government that they will not give up
control of the port. -The port of Djibouti is owned and controlled by Djibouti,
100%, and one of the reasons
why we reclaimed, we don’t want to forfeit
our sovereignty to any party. Our sole intention is to build
an economic future for our population. For us, ports are the one
strategic asset that we have and we treasure it. We will do anything
we can to nurture, to develop them
for the benefit of, not just of Djibouti,
but also of the global shipping system and countries
in the region. -This is entirely plausible. In fact, it’s like a game
of chess in which you can see checkmate
five moves out, and if the United States
does not take some action to reverse it,
in short order, our interests will absolutely
be harmed quite seriously.

The narrator first says US is there to "fight terrorism" then goes on talking about the strategic importance of that location. America has exploited "terrorism" to expand its bases, just like it has exploited other things to expand all over the world. It has little to do with fighting "terrorism", its more about controlling the important port.

The ultra rich Arab emirs can teach Djibouti how not end up like venezuela or south sudan. The emirs are very clever at trade and politic that even American politicians cant weaken them. Learn from them. Do they choose to become the next south sudan and venezuela? Or ultra rich Dubai and Qatar? The richest cities on earth is not new york, paris or london but Abu Dabi. Look it up. Let me see if you can build modern and ultra rich cities with your oil like those emirati cities.

The US owes so much money to China. Controlling this location doesn’t pay a fraction of what that amount is. As a matter of fact, the US controlling that “strategic” location has done absolutely nothing to even help with paying its debt to China. What Trump is doing is focusing on things going on inside America, because we see how being focused on the outside of the US has influenced our politicians(the Clinton’s). There’s so many things “wrong” going on with this desperate attempt for an argument. It really seems that The Washington post is willing to even use an African-American to try and reach/sway an Audience and their attention to their side of a political agenda. No offense to anybody of African-American background, not that I feel I have said something offensive but with everybody being so hyper sensitive about every little thing nowadays, you can never be sure how people are gonna respond.

Lease out land is actually a great option for weaker nations who needs development…

China was once very weak, poor. In the end Macau and Hong Kong was leased out.
Now those areas are well developed, brings in skilled workers, high quality university professionals… Great benefit for China in the end, also at the time 1980s when China was developing her economy, those area supplied skilled professional, factories, into China.

Same happens with Greece who leased out her x2 terminals of a port to China, that port advanced 50 places in world cargo turnover for Greece (that's income $) in 3 years time!

Same for East Europe Belarus of her own decision "invited" China in to develop her "prime land" leased out to China 90+yrs!
Sri Lanka, Pakistan did same when they have financial issues…
The government in Pakistan see this as an opportunity.

What West especially US say is bad, in fact can comes to a beneficial win-win for both parties, weaker and developing nations to develop, using the other's strengths and for the other China to expand economically and her BRI …

Leasing land is NOT taking land just like Hong Kong, Macao was returned…
IMHO China will also honour her agreement with the same

  53. Advant Garde Posted on December 25, 2018 at 5:49 am

The USA bombs and destroys and then steals your gold, diamonds and oil. The Chinese, on the other hand, will build whatever you want, such as infrastructure, mega dams, ports, etc. in exchange for these same goods — in other words, they pay fair prices. I know who I'd rather trade with!
