There are so many beginners, especially adults, who couldn't care less about their proper form in serves (or even ground strokes). For them, it all boils down to attending a few basic training sessions with the goal in mind that they could quickly get into the tournament environment even if their forms do not look good or skills are amiss. Now, if the students only want to learn the basics, they are missing out on learning the small, but vital, steps and concepts. Most of all, bad form = more prone to injuries. But there are coaches that will have to live with what their customers prefer or risk losing a student or a club membership in general.

My first teacher years back didn't teach us to do anything other than use continental grip. Certainly didn't teach us about pronation of follow through foot placement. Just basically to get a good direction in and worry about power later. You can't even get good power if you're hitting it like a pancake !

Great explanation! My problem is the footwork and when to go up and hit the serve. Sometimes it's like I am jumping up at the ball, then other times I hit the ball over top of it. I've used the Western grip for serves for years, but I will start using the Continental. I usually use the Continental as a 2nd serve as a spin serve…I probably should just practice what you should though from now on.

Feel Tennis instructions are better than Tennis for Dummies. It breaks down better tennis understanding to the lowest common denominator. Where were these guys when I was in my 20s and had perfect working knees?
With Feel Tennis instructions I would have totally overhauled my game and been a beast on the court.

If you have a high athletic floor, in addition to some background in any other sport that requires throwing overhand, serving will become and remain easy. If not, it will always be a struggle, relative to those others I just mentioned.

I also have been playing tennis for a long time. When was younger I was a 4.7 player, which is a pretty good club player. My serve was not bad. Not great, but decent I thought. Watching this video I realize that I was doing it all wrong all these years! I was making all the mistakes he talks about. I was trying to use a continental grip, but not really. And I tried to put spin on the ball but not really. I was doing what he told me people do, pushing with my shoulders, directing the serve, flat serve result. I got pretty good at doing it wrong! This video is the first video that makes me instantly visualize how to do it right! I wish I had seen this video 40 years ago! Never the less, at age 66 this video makes me want to learn a proper serve! I will try! As an aside, i realize everything he is saying also applies to the overhead smash, which is why my overhead never proceeded beyond "barely passable".
